Any expert bargain shopper will tell you that if you know what to look out for, you can walk away with incredible, high-quality pieces of furniture that are sure to last you many years. The problem is of course that if you’re not an expert bargain shopper, how can you be certain that you know what to look for in low-priced furniture.
We’ve put together a couple of pointers you can consider when you’re purchasing your next piece of furniture on an affordable budget.
- Look at the minor details
When you’re looking at wooden furniture, be sure to ask about the type of wood the pieces are made from. Solid wood is often your best bet, but can be more expensive than veneer and composite wood types. Also, make sure that the latches, drawers and cabinets all open and close easily and evenly. While you’re at it, be on the lookout for water stains, or joints that are nailed or glued together, instead of joined. Any of these should give you a clear indication whether the furniture will serve you for years to come.
- Think ahead
Even though a piece of furniture is cheap and well-made, it might still not be the right fit for you. Your lifestyle should give you a clear idea of what fabrics and materials you should put in your home. For example, if your pets get to sit on the couch, a white fabric is probably not the best idea. Also keep in mind that your idea of what great colours consists of can and will change over time. So think twice before you buy the polka dot lounge.
- It’s still furniture
Just because the furniture is on the lower end of the price scale, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t treat it like any other purchase. Take your time when choosing a piece of furniture, and don’t just buy because it’s cheap, buy it because you know it’s the right fit for the room that you’ve earmarked for it.
